Home > Faucet Selections, Styles and Functions

Faucets are indispensable components of bathrooms and serve multiple functions. When it comes to bathroom repair and upgrade, one of the first considerations is faucet replacement. When choosing a faucet for your bathroom, there are many options from which to choose, with the primary factor being the design appeal and style. Changing your faucet can be a great upgrade that can significantly improve the outlook of your bathroom.

The four basic types of faucets

  1. Ball faucets
  2. The ball faucet has a handle attached to a round cap, referred to as a “ball”, directly atop the spout. When the handle is moved, the ball moves and in turn controls the water flow.

  3. Disc faucets
  4. The disc faucet a relatively new style of faucets, which has a lever fixed on top of a cylindrical body. A pressure chamber also called a pressure balance cartridge is where the hot and cold waters are mixed. The water flow is controlled by a disc, made of ceramic, which lowers and rises in the chamber. The temperature of the water can be altered by rotating the handle from side-to-side.

  5. Cartridge faucets
  6. This type of bathroom faucet has two handles which control water flow by moving the stem cartridge.

  7. Compression washer faucet
  8. Compression washer faucets are one of the oldest types of faucets, which have two handles that move in a tight rotational motion to control the flow of water. Though relatively inexpensive, these faucets get damaged more easily than other types of faucets. The washer is prone to leakages and wear.

Touchless/sensor faucets
The typical traditional faucet has handles that control the flow of water. These have been in use for decades, but gradually, concerns about their role in the spread of germs came under light. This led to the development of touchless faucets, which have now become a popular choice in both the commercial and domestic spheres. Touchless faucets use presence sensors (infrared or ultrasound sensors) that are able to detect the presence of hands under the spout. When hands are brought under the faucet, the sensors open the solenoid valves and water begins to flow.

Features of faucets

  1. Spout:
  2. All faucets have a spout; the part which is above the surface of the sink and carries the other vital parts. The spout is important in designs and the style, color, shape, and material of the spout contribute to the outlook.

  3. Handles:
  4. The handles in traditional faucets control the water flow by opening and closing the valves.

  5. Sensor:
  6. Touchless faucets do not have handles. Instead, they make use or infrared or ultrasound sensors to detect hands when they are brought under the spout. These sensors control the solenoid valves.

  7. Power source:
  8. Sensor faucets require a power source for the sensors, valve, and other electronics. This can either be an AC transformer or a dry cell.

Functions of different faucets
Faucets are, without doubt, indispensable parts of bathrooms. Be it in restaurants and hotels, or in homes and apartments, faucets are absolutely necessary. They serve a range of functions, from simple washing of hands to eliminating the spread of germs.

  1. Control of pipe water
  2. Faucets are a necessary means of controlling the flow of the piped water. Without these, you will not be able to stop the water coming in your bathrooms.

  3. Mixer faucets enable temperature control
  4. Traditionally, there used to be separate taps controlling the flow of hot and cold water. With the advancement of technology, mixer faucets became more common. These faucets enable mixing of hot and cold water via one tap, where you can rotate the handle to manage the temperature of the water.

  5. Sensor faucets minimize risk of contamination
  6. In traditional faucets, where the user has to make contact with the faucet, there is an immense risk of contracting germs, especially from faucets in public places like hotels. By eliminating the need to touch the faucet in any way, the touchless faucets eliminate the risk of contamination.
