The Making of the Handwashing Sequence

A successful handwashing station should be assessed as a coordinated sequence: approach, activation, wetting, soap delivery, rinsing, drying and exit. WELL handwashing guidance requires that sinks, soap, and adequate drying facilities are readily available. The tap and dispenser are not to be located in the same sensing zone, and the spout outlet is to be directed into the basin so that it does not hit the drain or front wall, or the user's hands at an angle that is prone to splash. Power supplies, soap reservoirs, control boxes and isolation valves under the counter should be accessible without removal of permanent millwork.

Water Efficiency Without Mislabeling

Water conservation is a component of operational efficiency and responsible building performance, but public lavatory specifications require specific wording. At this time, EPA has determined that public lavatory faucets are not eligible for the WaterSense label. Therefore, AEC teams should not use general claims such as “WaterSense-certified public tap” unless the product category is eligible and is listed separately.

For public lavatories, the specification should instead state the maximum flow rate, duration of activation, automatic shutoff behaviour, operating pressure range and applicable plumbing-code requirements. You can still opt for WaterSense-labeled products in eligible categories like toilets, showerheads and private lavatory faucets.

Water Quality and Water Management in Buildings

Water safety must be coordinated with the low-flow design. Water age can increase due to reduced fixture demand, oversized branch piping or long periods of inactivity. ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188 establishes minimum legionellosis risk-management requirements for many building water systems . CDC guidance has warned that sinks and drains in healthcare environments can be contaminated reservoirs .

Restroom fixture selection must therefore be integrated with the building water-management plan, flushing protocols, temperature control strategy, branch-line design and commissioning sequence. Sensor faucets should not be considered as a replacement for an engineered water-management program.

For wetted components, project teams should obtain current evidence for applicable health-effects and lead-content requirements including NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 where required by code or owner criteria. Certifications need to be validated at the exact model and configuration level. A marketing statement at the family level does not replace an active third-party listing.

Accessibility & Inclusive Use

Wellness design that is WELL aligned should be inclusive too. The U.S. Access Board requires compliant lavatories in accessible toilet and bathing rooms, and addresses clear floor space, knee and toe clearance, reach ranges, pipe protection and operable parts .

Activating a sensor can reduce the need to grasp or twist . However , automatic operation does not necessarily mean an installation is accessible . Counter height, bowl depth, spout reach, mirror location, dispenser location and under-counter equipment must be coordinated as an accessible assembly.
