Indian residential neighborhood

Their shops primarily offered goat milk

Cross Street's origins trace back to an Indian residential neighborhood where Indian boatmen resided and conducted their businesses. Their shops primarily offered goat milk, mutton, and herbs. Due to the prevalence of milk shops, the local Chinese community referred to the street as "kiat leng kia koi" (where "kiat leng kia" is a derogatory term for Indians, and "koi" means street), or simply "Kling man's street" (with "kling" being another derogatory term for Indians). Tamils, on the other hand, named it "palkadei sadakku," signifying the "street of the milk shops," while Malays called it "kampong susu," translating to the "milk village."
